What is the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço PR8 Hike?
The Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço hike (also known as the PR8 hike) is one of the most popular hikes on Madeira. The coastal trail travels to the easternmost point on the island, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and ocean.
The PR8 trail is relatively moderate with only a few steep sections as it wanders along the peninsula. The trail has many viewpoints, both along the trail and on short spurs off it to higher viewpoints or to secluded beaches.
At the end, you have a few things you can do! If you want to take a break, you can enjoy a snack and drink at the Cafetaria Sardine House. If you want to hike to another viewpoint, you can ascend the steep trail to Ponta do Furado.
And once you finish in the area, you can either hike the trail back to the trailhead or take a boat back. The boat was pretty pricey, but we saw quite a few people taking it. We really enjoyed the hike back to the parking lot because you can enjoy the views from a different perspective, so if you are up for it, I highly recommend hiking back!
Do I need a Permit to Hike Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço?
Yes, you need a permit to hike the PR8 trail in Madeira.
Madeira recently installed a new reservation system (check it out here) for its hiking trails to help manage trail congestion and preserve the fragile environment. Most of the PR trails require a permit, and you will book a 30-minute time slot in advance. That 30-minute slot is when you should arrive to start the hike.
For the PR8, you want to book “PR8 | Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço”. Since this is a popular hike, I recommend booking your time slot in advance, especially if you want to hike it in the morning.
We waited too long to book ours and were not able to get a morning reservation, so we had to get an early afternoon time slot. The main reason we wanted to hike it in the morning was that there tends to be fewer crowds. The trail was pretty crowded in the afternoon, but honestly, we did not mind!
How to Get to the PR8 Trailhead
There are a few ways to get to the PR8 trailhead. We drove ourselves because we like being on our own schedule rather than waiting for a bus or taxi, but you can take a taxi, bus, or go with a hiking guide.
By Driving
If you have a rental car, you can easily drive yourself to the trailhead. I would give yourself a bit of extra time because parking can be a bit of a pain, especially if you go late morning or early afternoon.
Our time slot was at 1:00 pm, so we arrived at the trailhead around 12:30 pm to give us time to find parking. When we arrived, cars lined the entire road leading to the parking lot. It was crazy to see how many cars there were!
We ended up finding a relatively close spot, but many people had to park far away and walk up the road. If you have an earlier time slot, parking will be a lot easier.
By Taxi
You can, of course, take a taxi to and from the PR8 trailhead. I recommend reserving your taxi in advance, especially if you plan to go early in the morning.
You can also use Bolt, which is similar to Uber. A few people recommended using Bolt because it was easy to use and tends to be cheaper than a traditional taxi.
By Bus
If you are staying in Funchal, you can take bus 113 to the PR8 trailhead. This option is pretty inexpensive, too (only a few euros)!
By Hiking Transfer
A few companies offer hiking transfers, making it easy to know you have definitive transportation to and from the PR8. These services pick you up at either a predetermined spot or your hotel, bring you to the trailhead, and then pick you up a few hours later at the trailhead.
Honestly, we were considering doing this just so we did not have to deal with finding parking, but most of these sold out quickly. If you want to book a hiking transfer, I recommend reserving it in advance!
By Tour
If you do not want to deal with planning and would rather hike with a guide, you have plenty of tour companies to choose from! When you go with a hiking guide, they should provide transportation to and from the trailhead, making it easier for you. It is also a great option if you do not feel comfortable hiking the PR8 by yourself.
What to Pack to Hike Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço
Like most of Madeira, the PR8 trail can have unpredictable weather. Because it is exposed, it can be quite windy and chilly, especially in the morning. I recommend packing a warm layer just in case!
Also, you really need to wear sunscreen on this hike. As I mentioned, the PR8 trail is exposed, making it easy to get a sunburn. Trust me, you should apply sunscreen before heading out!
This is a great baseline for what to pack, and you can adjust as needed:

Hiking Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8): Step-By-Step Guide
This step-by-step guide has everything you need to know to hike the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8)! The PR8 trail was one of my favorite hikes in Madeira, so I know you will love it, too!
Always remember to leave no trace. It is crucial to pack out what you pack in and leave no trash behind. Some trailheads have trash bins, so you can easily throw your trash away. If they do not, take your trash with you and throw it away once you reach a trash bin.
PR8 Trailhead to Miradouro de São Lourenço
At the PR8 trailhead, an officer will either check your ticket before you head onto the trail or within the first few minutes on the trail. We only waited in a short line for them to check our tickets before we started our hike!
The PR8 immediately descends as it wanders through beautiful wildflowers. To the right, you can see the rest of the peninsula where you will head on the hike. The views are stunning here, but wait until you get further!
After about half a mile, you will see a short spur to the left to a viewpoint called Miradouro de São Lourenço. The views from here of the surrounding cliffs are stunning! It is also a relatively big viewpoint, so you can easily find a spot to enjoy the views and take a photo.
Miradouro de São Lourenço to the Loop Junction
After Miradouro de São Lourenço, the trail steeply ascends stairs. Make sure to stop and look back towards the views because they are stunning!
At the top of the stairs, the trail levels out before bringing you to the next viewpoint called Pedra Furada. Pedra Furada offers views of the ocean and surrounding cliffs.
The trail then continues ascending for a bit more before descending steeply towards one of my favorite parts of the trail. You will know you reached it because there are drop-offs on each side of the trail. But do not worry! It is not sketchy, and I thought it was fun!
This section also offers stunning views of the rest of the peninsula, and you can see the trail as it travels to the final viewpoint.
At about 1.5 miles into the hike, you will reach the loop junction. You can hike either side of the loop since they bring you to the same spot, but we turned right to continue along the coast towards Cafetaria Sardine House.
Loop Junction to Cafetaria Sardine House
If you continue right, as we did, the trail descends towards a bridge. This section made me truly feel like I was on Mars, and I loved it! The landscape is so unique.
When we hiked the PR8, a guy was standing at the end of the bridge asking if anyone wanted to book a boat ride back to the trailhead. We did not want to, but if you did, you would head back to that spot after you finish hiking to take the boat back.
After the bridge, the trail begins to ascend again towards Cafetaria Sardine House.
Cafetaria Sardine House to Miradouro Ponta do Furado
Once you reach Cafetaria Sardine House, you can grab a snack and drink or use the restroom. When we arrived, it was really crowded, and the line for food and drinks was pretty long, so we decided to skip a break and continue on the trail!
After the cafe, you have two choices: loop back around and begin your hike to the trailhead, or make the steep ascent to the highest viewpoint on the trail, Ponta do Furado.
If you hike to Ponta do Furado, the trail gains about 200 feet of elevation in 0.2 miles to the summit. It is steep and will make you work for the views! But once you are at the top, you are rewarded with beautiful 360-degree views.
Ponta do Furado to the PR8 Trailhead
Once you descend Ponta do Furado, or if you decide to skip hiking to the top, you will pass the cafe and follow along the rest of the loop.
This portion of the trail is relatively flat as it brings you back to the loop junction, where you will follow the trail back to the trailhead.
I loved hiking the trail back because we enjoyed the views from a different perspective. The views along the PR8 hike are stunning, which is why I recommend hiking back instead of taking a boat if your legs are up for it.
Before you know it, you will be back at the trailhead!
Extra Stop After the Hike: Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto
Although Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto is not along the PR8 hike, it is easily drivable after you finish hiking! The viewpoint is stunning and a favorite sunrise spot for many.
I recommend stopping by the Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto after the PR8 to enjoy more views before moving on for the day. Or you can visit for sunrise and enjoy a peaceful spot before starting the hike.
