Iron Mountain NH Overview

Iron Mountain (2,723') in New Hampshire is, in my opinion, an underrated hike. Although the summit itself does not have any views, the ledges past it offer incredible views of the surrounding mountains. The trail is relatively gradual to the summit with a few steeper sections as it descends to the ledges. And if you want an added adventure, you can also hike to the old mines near the ledges.

Trail Details

Trail: Iron Mountain Trail

Length: 4.4 miles

Elevation Gain: 1,400 feet

My Trail Time: 2 hours hiking; 3 hours total

Hike Overview

NOTE: The road leading to Iron Mountain Trail is closed in the winter.

Iron Mountain was originally on the 52 With a View List but was removed a few years ago because the trail was in rough shape. But Iron Mountain Trail was recently restored, so it has since been added back to the list!

The trail to the summit is relatively gradual with a few viewpoints along the way. The summit itself does not have views, but the ledges about 0.7 miles past it offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. You can also make the steep descent to the old mines near the ledges.

Also, the parking lot near the trailhead can only fit a handful of cars, so if it is full, you need to park in the overflow parking about 0.25 miles down the road.

Iron Mountain NH via Iron Mountain Trail Guide

April 26, 2026

**Always remember to leave no trace. It is crucial to pack out what you pack in and throw away your trash properly.

Iron Mountain had been on my bucket list for quite some time, but since it was removed from the 52 With a View List a few years ago, I have prioritized others that were on the list. But it is now back on the list, and although I finished the list before it was added, I wanted to hike it finally!

We started hiking to Iron Mountain on a beautiful Sunday morning, and we managed to grab the last spots in the parking area. I almost parked in the overflow parking area about 0.25 miles down the road because I assumed the trailhead parking area was full, but we lucked out with getting the last spots!

The Iron Mountain Trail started across from the parking area and immediately provided breathtaking views looking towards Mount Washington. The trail traveled into an open field briefly before heading into the forest.

The first 1.3 miles on the trail leading to the summit of Iron Mountain were relatively gradual with a few switchbacks. We gained just under 1,000 feet of elevation, but honestly, it did not feel like it.

Also, right before the summit, there was a small viewpoint, which offered views looking towards Mount Washington. We almost missed it, but happened to see someone just leaving it as we walked past the short side trail.

We knew we had arrived at the summit once we saw the remnants of an old fire tower. Iron Mountain did not have any views, but I bet it used to have beautiful 360-degree views when the fire tower was still standing.

We did not spend much time at the summit and continued the final 0.7 miles to the ledges. After the summit, the trail began to descend a few steep sections before becoming more gradual. The trail wandered through a beautiful pine forest before finally arriving at the mine and ledges intersection.

We decided to skip the mines, so we followed the sign to the ledges and were rewarded with incredible views! We ended up staying on the ledges for over an hour, yapping and enjoying snacks with views, because the weather was perfect. We also had the ledges to ourselves for the entire time we were there.

When we were ready, we packed up and started the ascent back to Iron Mountain. The trail had a few steep sections on the way to the summit, but it was not anything too out of the ordinary.

After Iron Mountain, the descent went by quickly. Since it the trail was gradual, we flew down, and before we knew it, we were enjoying the final views of Mount Washington before arriving at our cars.

I am so happy Iron Mountain is back on the 52 With a View List because the views are spectacular! I will definitely hike this trail again.
